Cycling Routes Around Liptovske Revuce: From Cyklokorytnicka to the Donovaly Trunk Route
Liptovske Revuce and the Revuca Valley are one of the best cycling regions in central Slovakia. The reason is simple: you have a comfortable paved route along a former narrow-gauge railway by the river, a mountain trunk route running through Donovaly, and dozens of shorter MTB trails in the forests of Velka Fatra to choose from. In this guide we will go through the best of them and explain what each is suited for.
Cyklokorytnicka - the paved classic through the Revuca Valley
The most famous route in the valley is Cyklokorytnicka. It runs from Ruzomberok through Liptovska Osada and Liptovske Revuce all the way to Korytnica and is roughly 23 kilometres long. The route follows a former narrow-gauge railway, which is why it has a very gentle gradient. That means it is also suitable for families with children, seniors and anyone who does not want cycling to be an ordeal.
The surface is mostly paved, with compacted gravel in places. The landscape alternates between forest, meadows and the banks of the Revuca river. Along the way there are rest stops with seating, information boards about the history of the narrow-gauge railway, and even a natural swimming spot where you can cool off on summer days.
Tip: The most pleasant option is to set off from Liptovske Revuce towards Korytnica (slightly uphill) and return on the way down. For a family with smaller children, just riding the section from Revuce to Liptovska Osada and back is enough, about 10 km in total.
Donovalska cyklomagistrala - for fit cyclists
If you are looking for a bigger challenge, try the Donovalska cyklomagistrala (cycle route no. 033). It connects Donovaly with Banska Bystrica and is around 32 to 35 kilometres long. The route is waymarked and runs through the landscape of Velka Fatra and the Starohorske vrchy hills, with several significant climbs and beautiful views.
You can also ride the trunk route in sections only: for example from Donovaly to Liptovske Revuce, which is a pleasant loop with a surface alternating between asphalt and forest road. For physically fit cyclists it makes an ideal full-day route.
MTB trails in the forests of Velka Fatra
The surroundings of Donovaly and Liptovske Revuce are laced with a network of forest roads and mountain trails suitable for MTB. In summer some of the cable cars at Donovaly also run for cyclists, so you do not have to pedal up every hill. The trails are technically varied, from easy forest roads to more demanding singletracks.
We recommend bringing standard MTB gear: helmet, gloves, protectors, plenty of water and a puncture repair kit. There is not always a signal in the forests, so download your route offline.
Nerina cabin for cyclists
Nerina cabin is great for cyclists for three reasons. First, it sits right on the Cyklokorytnicka, so you can join the route practically from the front door.
