Day trips from Liptovské Revúce: 6 ideas for the whole family

The Nerina cabin in Liptovské Revúce sits on the boundary between Veľká Fatra and the Low Tatras, which makes it an ideal starting point for trips around the region. Within less than an hour's drive you will find landmarks listed by UNESCO, a fairytale village, water parks and a cycle path tracing the route of an old narrow-gauge railway. We have prepared six ideas that cover both rainy and sunny days and will entertain children and adults alike.

1. Vlkolínec - a village listed by UNESCO

Vlkolínec is a preserved log-house settlement above Ružomberok and since 1993 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is a living example of traditional architecture from central Slovakia: log cottages, a wooden bell tower and a well set into a hilly landscape. From Liptovské Revúce it is roughly 30 kilometres via Ružomberok, about 40 minutes by car.

A walk through the village is short and even small children can manage it. You can combine it with a visit to Ružomberok or a trip into the surrounding hills.

Tip: Come early in the morning or later in the afternoon. During the day Vlkolínec gets the most visitors and photos without crowds turn out better in the quieter hours.

2. Habakuky in Donovaly - a fairytale village

Donovaly is not just a ski resort. In the Park Snow area you will find the fairytale village Habakuky, inspired by the work of Pavol Dobšinský. Here children can look forward to interactive shows, fairytale characters and wooden structures taken straight from the stories. It is a classic destination for families with younger children, and Donovaly is quickly reachable from Liptovské Revúce.

In summer the area also runs the Donovalkovo children's amusement park and other attractions, so a full day of fun is taken care of.

3. Tatralandia and Bešeňová water parks - water in any weather

When the weather is not suited to hiking, the Liptov water parks are the answer. Tatralandia near Liptovský Mikuláš is one of the largest in Slovakia, with a year-round section and plenty of slides. The Bešeňová thermal spa tempts visitors with mineral-water pools and views of the mountains. Both are reachable from Liptovské Revúce by car in roughly an hour.

Tip: A rainy day is ideal for a water park. While others sit around the cabin, you can enjoy the water and wellness without the crowds that gather when the sun is out.

4. Cyklokorytnička - following the narrow-gauge railway

The Cyklokorytnička cycle path runs through the Revúca valley along the bed of a former narrow-gauge railway. The route is about 23 kilometres one way, almost flat, and follows the Revúca river, so it can be managed even by families with children and less experienced cyclists. The start is practically at the cabin's doorstep.

Thanks to its gentle profile it is a great choice for a relaxed day on the bike. Along the way there are plenty of spots to stop and rest by the water.

5. Malinô Brdo - bike park and lookout

The Malinô Brdo resort above Ružomberok is known in winter for the longest artificially snow-covered ski slope in Slovakia, measuring 3.9 kilometres. In summer it turns into a bike park with routes for mountain bikes and a cable car that takes you up together with your bike. For families there are plenty of easier trails and views over Liptov.

Even if you are not cyclists, the cable-car ride up and a walk along the ridge are worth it. From Liptovské Revúce you get there via Ružomberok.

6. Park Snow Donovaly in summer - family attractions

Donovaly deserves a separate mention even outside the winter season. Besides Habakuky and the Donovalkovo children's park you will find rope courses, bike rentals and a network of marked trails for both walkers and cyclists. It is a place where you can spend a whole day and combine activities according to the age and mood of the children.

How to plan your trips from the Nerina cabin

The distances we give are approximate and always depend on the particular route and conditions. Liptovské Revúce, however, is ideally located: from here you are close both to the mountains and to the best-known attractions of Liptov. Wherever you set off, after a day full of experiences a calm evening under the mountains awaits you at the Nerina cabin.
