Hiking to Ploská: An Overlooked Peak of Veľká Fatra

If you are looking for accommodation in Veľká Fatra and long for a ridge hike without the crowds, Ploská (1,532 m above sea level) is the answer. This peak of Veľká Fatra stands a little in the shadow of the better-known Krížna and Ostredok, but that is exactly why in October you will have it almost to yourself. From around the cabin in Liptov you can combine a day on foot with the autumn atmosphere of golden beech forests.

Why Ploská, and why in October

Veľká Fatra has several peaks above 1,500 metres. The highest is Ostredok (1,596 m), and Krížna (1,574 m) and Rakytov (1,567 m) are not far behind. Ploská (1,532 m) is a little lower, but for views it is hard to beat, thanks to its open southern ridge. October is the ideal month for the climb: the beeches turn golden brown, the air is clear and walking without the summer heat is a pleasure. There are far fewer hikers than in August.

Tip: Set off in the morning while the autumn mist still sits in the valleys - the view from the ridge over a sea of fog is one of the finest sights in Veľká Fatra.

The route and the starting point

Ploská lies in the northern part of Veľká Fatra. Hiking trails lead up to it from several sides, most often from Partizánska Ľupča or from the Korytnica saddle. From Liptovské Revúce you can drive to the trailheads in about 30 to 40 minutes. The yellow and green waymarked trails take you up to the ridge, from where the summit sign is just a short step away. The total climb depends on the starting point you choose, but on most routes you should count on several hundred metres of ascent.

Tip: Sturdy hiking boots are a must - in autumn the Ploská ridge can be wet and slippery after the first light frosts.

Autumn colours on the way to the summit

Veľká Fatra is described in the literature as a range of beech forests - and Ploská bears that out. In October you walk through dense beech woods whose leaves range from pale yellow to deep red. Every hour the palette changes as the sun moves through the treetops. The path here is soft with fallen leaves, the scent of the forest is strong and the silence is broken only by footsteps and the occasional gust of wind on the ridge.

Views from Ploská

From the summit of Ploská a panorama opens up in several directions. In good visibility you will see the ridges of the Low Tatras to the east and the outline of Malá Fatra to the north. The other peaks of Veľká Fatra - Ostredok, Krížna and Rakytov - stand close by, so you can compare their heights with your own eyes. The broad, treeless grassy slopes along the ridge look golden in the autumn sun and make for great photographs.

Tip: Charge your camera or phone at home - there may be nowhere to charge it on the ridge, and the sunlit views are worth every megapixel.

Combining the hike with other activities in Liptov

The hike up Ploská combines well with other trips in Liptov. When you get back, you can relax your muscles in one of the thermal pools you can reach by car from Liptovské Revúce - for example at Bešeňová (about 9 to 12 km from Ružomberok). For family groups there are easier trails around Donovaly and gentle autumn walks in the valley. If you would like to end the day with a touch of history, visit the UNESCO village of Vlkolínec (about 30 km from Liptovské Revúce via Ružomberok).
