Hiking around Donovaly: 5 trails worth the climb

Liptovské Revúce and Donovaly sit right on the border between Veľká Fatra and the Low Tatras. For hikers, this is one of the most attractive corners of central Slovakia. Ploská, Rakytov, Krížna, Borišov - these are all peaks you can climb straight from the village below the Nerina cabin. We have put together an overview of five trails that cover the whole spectrum: from an easy walk for families with children to a full-day climb for experienced hikers.
1. Ploská (1,532 m) - the jewel of Veľká Fatra
Ploská is the best-known peak in Veľká Fatra and a classic for anyone who wants to experience a ridge view in this mountain range. The trail is marked with a yellow hiking trail marker straight from Liptovské Revúce. Expect 4.5 to 5.5 hours of walking round trip, with an elevation gain of almost 800 metres.
The route first leads through forest along a stream, then gradually climbs into an open ridge with the typical Fatra alpine meadow. From the summit, in good weather, you will see the Low Tatras, the Choč Mountains and the High Tatras. The climb is most beautiful in autumn, when the forests turn golden-red, and in June, when the meadows are in bloom.
Tip: Set out early in the morning. The ridges of Veľká Fatra are exposed to the weather and storms build up quickly here in the afternoon.
2. Rakytov (1,567 m) - the less-visited brother of Ploská
Rakytov lies north of Ploská, also in Veľká Fatra, and is therefore noticeably quieter than its more famous neighbour. The classic approach is from Liptovské Revúce or from Liptovská Osada. Here too you move along ridge terrain with a fine panoramic view.
If you are looking for a climb without crowds of hikers, Rakytov is exactly that. The route can be combined with Ploská into a full-day ridge traverse, which is probably the most beautiful hiking experience you can have here.
3. Krížna (1,574 m) - a panoramic loop above Donovaly
Krížna is the third major peak in Veľká Fatra within reach of the Nerina cabin. From Krížna you can continue along the ridge further to Ostredok, Borišov or gradually all the way to Ploská. For fit hikers there is the option of a two-day route with an overnight stay at the Borišov cabin.
4. The Dve veže via ferratas - adrenaline above Liptovské Revúce
For those who want a bit more excitement, the area around Liptovské Revúce has the Dve veže via ferratas. These are secured climbing routes with steel rungs and cables, for which you need a complete via ferrata set (harness, lanyard, helmet). After completing them you are rewarded with a fine view down into the valley and the feeling that you have earned your evening by the fireplace.
Important: Via ferratas are technically more demanding. If you have no experience, we recommend going with a guide or someone with via ferrata practice.
5. Family trails along the Revúca river
If you are going on holiday with small children or simply want an easy walk, the gentle trails along the Revúca river are ideal. The routes are mostly flat, lined by forest and stream, and can be adjusted to an hour or to half a day. Along the way there are spots for a picnic and for cooling your feet in the cold mountain water.
The Nerina cabin as a base for hiking

The Nerina cabin stands right in Liptovské Revúce, in a forest clearing on the edge of the village. For hikers this means two things: in the morning you set off straight from the door (no commuting needed) and after a full-day climb a fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen and a covered terrace with a grill await you. You sleep in one of two separate sections (each for 12 people), so a family and a larger group of friends both fit.
In the cabin gallery you will find real photos of the interior and exterior. You can check the current price and availability of dates in the booking system, or take a look at the price overview.
Practical tips for hiking in the area
- Season: the best time is from June to October. In winter the ridges are recommended only for experienced hikers with avalanche gear.

- Water: there are no streams on the ridges, so bring enough with you.
- Footwear: trekking boots with ankle support, especially for Ploská and Rakytov.
- Weather: check horsky.zachranari.sk or predpoved.shmu.sk. It changes quickly on the ridges.
